Memorial Poems

You’re gone.
It is so difficult to believe…
The memories – still alive and well,
Make my heart, with sadness, heave.

My grief belittles these words I speak,
Makes them sound so very hollow;
The emptiness that resides within me –
The greatest proof of my true sorrow.

The memories of those times we spent
Together – in joyous harmony
The arguments, the sorrow – we shared it all
Hand in hand, we fought troubles many.

I realize that you’ll never speak again
To me – in that voice so full of concern,
Nor will you provide me with security
From dangers I was unable to discern.

I know not how to shed tears of grief
Yet know not, either, how to refrain;
For while I know that you’re here no more,
In my heart, you’ll always, forever, remain.

The loss of someone close to you is something that persists lifelong, whether it is a family member, or a dear friend. While we all know that death is the most certain and inevitable truth of life once you are born, somehow, we are not able to accept it as a fact when we ourselves have to undergo losing someone. It is then a matter of great courage that we attend that special person’s funeral ceremony, and bid them goodbye with such a heavy heart. The fact that it is the last time we are seeing their face, albeit immobile and lifeless, is one that is very difficult to digest.

On such occasions, we are desperate to talk to someone and share our grief for the death of the deceased individual, but we don’t wish to burden others, who are already bearing the burden of their own sorrow, with that of ours. However, we do need some method of expression to articulate our feelings accurately, for otherwise we seem to be feeling suffocated and smothered by them. Grief is best when let out; expressed in some for or the other, and in order to do so, the best way is to construct a memorial poem for that person, as a tribute to them for their lifelong love and support towards you.

Memorial poems can be written in any way you want. There are no restrictions whatsoever. You can write exactly how you feel, declare the magnitude of your sorrow, quietly explain your feeling of solitude and emptiness on their absence, and show the intense magnitude of your love for them – all through a small, beautiful memorial poem. A memorial poem can include anecdotes and memories of the wonderful times you have spent together, and how you will sorely miss their existence in your life.

You will find many memorial poems on the internet, where amateur poets seem to have poured their hearts out, and choose any one of them to recite at your loved one’s funeral. However, in order to make the audience realize exactly how important the person was to you, it would be better to write your own little memorial poem for them.

Memorial poems will relieve you of your grief, even if it is in a small way, and give you the satisfaction of contributing something to the last and final ceremony that your loved one is going to experience.
